We are now all left to wonder: Were we the same cocky, load, brash assholes who bragged about smashing their opponents like guitars being Weapons of Mass Destruction and then lost on the big stage just like the Americans were in 2000? Or were we just unlucky?
Was James Magnussen just having an off day? Is he any chance in the individual 100m freestyle after his slow showing this morning?
More importantly, did Magnussen's weak showing in the post-race interview say more about his character than anything we have seen up to this point? Call it what you will, but Magnussen's response to Channel 9's pool side interviewer Giaan Rooney was definitely un-Australian, and it will take a massive effort from the superstar to keep the critics off his back in the lead up to his pet race.
Magnussen has been talking the talk. We know he can walk the walk. Now he just has to let the rest of his character catch up.
