Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein received compensation of $US16.1 million in 2011, as reported in the papers today. Despite GS reporting a 47 per cent drop in earnings to $US4.4 billion in 2011, his pay increased 14% on 2010.
Goldman Sachs, one of the largest investment banks in the world, suffered devastating losses in the US housing crisis in 2007-2008 which was a major driver of the GFC. Goldman received a massive bailout from the US Government to avoid bankruptcy in 2008, but has clearly "recovered" pretty well to be paying out these kinds of salaries.
